What was the last good movie you watched?
We watched The Thin Man with our son last night and remembered all over again why Nick and Nora Charles are still our favorite married couple.
Nora Charles: It's lovely. I'm having a copy made for you.
Nora Charles: Pretty girl.
Nick Charles: Yes. She's a very nice type.
Nora Charles: You got types?
Nick Charles: Only you, darling. Lanky brunettes with wicked jaws.
Nick Charles: I'm a hero. I was shot twice in the Tribune.
Nora Charles: I read where you were shot 5 times in the tabloids.
Nick Charles: It's not true. He didn't come anywhere near my tabloids.
Nick Charles: Oh, it's all right, Joe. It's all right. It's my dog. And, uh, my wife.
Nora Charles: Well you might have mentioned me first on the billing.
Audio: Share a song you just can't stand.
Book: Show us a book you've read more than once.
Not the response you were expecting, is it? I like to mix things up like that, plus I love children's books anyway. Having a child is just a great excuse to get to read them again, over and over and over again. (Kids are like that, they love the repetition of the same song, book, video, you name it: pick your media wisely, you are are going to be stuck with it for quite some time.)
p.s. Did you know it's the 50th anniversary of the publication of The Cat in the Hat this year? Wow, that's hard to believe. (If you say anything about how old I am, you die...)
Video: Get us in the mood for Halloween by showing us your favorite scary scene or creepy costumes.
True story, when I was in high school I went to see a series of movies that pretty much freaked me out for life. They were, in order:
1. The Omen. Oh my God, I was visiting my friend Janie out of town and we went on a double date to see this movie, which I had been expressly banned from seeing by my ultra conservative, ultra Catholic mother. Well, the gig was up when I got back home and was having screaming nightmares for days on end. My mother dragged me off to have a visit with a priest *just in case* I was possessed (I wasn't). I still can't look at anything to do with that movie -- it pretty much destroyed Gregory Peck for me, which is a shame since he is such a great actor -- or even think about some of the scenes in it too long without breaking out in a cold sweat. Biggest mistake ever for a Catholic schoolgirl, I can tell you that. There are just some things you can't ever get completely over and the terror of the ultimate evil is one of them. Seeing a movie like this doesn't help.
2. Carrie. Just watched that this weekend after 30 years and it scared the crap out of me again. I even screamed at the end... again... just like the little wuss that I am. Pathetic, I know.
p.s. Brain DePalma has some serious mother issues... I am talking years-of-therapy-to-overcome or hardcore drug addiction SERIOUS.
3. And, finally, the big daddy of them all... THE SHINING. Scariest. F**king. Movie. Ever. I spent half of the time I was supposed to be watching it out in the lobby at the Cornell theater and the other half in tears almost on the (gross, disgusting, sticky) floor. My girlfriends were useless to help me since they were scared stiff themselves. I don't think Terri Grossman ever looked so still and quiet (her reaction was to freeze up, while mine was one of utter hysterics... I am actually surprised they didn't ask me to leave). I still don't think I've recovered. Oh, and did I mention that my husband has identical twin sisters that remind me of the two freaks in this clip? Yeah, well, let's just say I knew that was a bad sign when I met them. Spawn of the devil, I'm telling you the truth.
HAPPY HALLOWEEN. Oh, and don't say I didn't warn you.
Show us your favorite team mascot.
Books: Show us a great children's book.

One of my very favorite albums from the seventies, I still listen to it all the time.
